This month, I’m excited to celebrate the return of my favorite two-player game to print: Compile: Main 1 and Compile: Main 2 from Greater Than Games. This dynamic deck-building duo has quickly become my go-to choice from my entire collection, that I find myself reaching for it at every opportunity.
From its addictive deck-building mechanics to its deeply satisfying lane-battling gameplay, this game delivers a fantastic experience for anyone who enjoys tight, strategic two-player battles. I highly recommend it to fans of competitive card games.
As a bonus, it makes an excellent December gift, it’s even compact enough to slip into a stocking

In the card game Compile, you and your opponent take on the roles of competing artificial intelligences striving to make sense of the world around you. Each player selects three “Protocols” representing abstract concepts—everything from Darkness and Water to more intricate ideas like Time, Chaos, or Death. These Protocols face off in three command-line “lanes,” where you play cards to reach a threshold and ultimately “Compile” the concept. The first player to successfully Compile all three of their Protocols achieves full understanding and wins the game.
What makes Compile so engaging is its unique approach to deck building. Each Protocol comes with six distinct cards tailored to its personality and playstyle. A Protocol like Death leans heavily into aggression, focusing on deleting or sabotaging opposing cards, while something like Psychic or Time emphasizes board manipulation, clever timing, and tactical disruption. No matter which three Protocols you combine, their effects naturally interact, creating synergies that feel clever, surprising, and deeply strategic.
Because every match begins with selecting a new trio of Protocols, no two games ever feel the same. The combinations are incredibly varied, and each pairing invites different tactics—sometimes you’ll craft an explosive, fast-paced deck, while other times you’ll build something slower and more controlling. That constant variability gives Compile an impressive level of replayability, encouraging experimentation and rewarding players who enjoy exploring new interactions.
Despite its depth, the game remains quick and approachable, often wrapping up in under half an hour. The lane-based system keeps turns focused and tactical, and the compact footprint makes it easy to bring anywhere. It’s absolutely a two-player game first and foremost, and that focus shows in how tight and thoughtfully balanced each match feels.
Overall, Compile stands out as a highly inventive, endlessly replayable duel that blends deck building, lane control, and clever combo play into a fast and satisfying package. Whether you enjoy aggressive confrontation, subtle manipulation, or puzzling out the perfect synergy between concepts, Compile offers a fresh and addictive experience that’s easy to pick up and hard to put down.
