Pride Month Featured Creator – Tillie Walden

“Tillie Walden is a queer indie comics creator; best known for her young adult graphic novels like On a Sunbeam, and Are You Listening, her Eisner award winning graphic novel Spinning, and my personal favorite, A City Inside.

Walden’s work is both beautiful and endlessly relatable; she handles everything from queer self-discovery and aging to magic fish spaceships and zombies, and she does it with an air of every day charm that feels comfortable and at times heart-wrenching. The fictional characters feel like real people, and she builds full, vibrant worlds around them. Similarly, her biographical work has a very grounded and tangible feel, making the stories easy to connect to and letting the emotional beats hit harder.

Tillie Walden attended The Center for Cartoon Studies, where she now teaches occasional short courses. She is married to fellow comics creator Emma Husinger: author and artist of How it All Ends, My Parents Won’t Stop Talking (co-created with Walden), She Would Feel the Same, and other short comics.” – Athena M.

You can find most of Tillie Walden’s works at GOCC including the titles mentioned above, Clementine – a story set in the The Walking Dead universe, I Love This Part, and many more!

You can visit Tillie Walden’s website by clicking here.

Staff Recommendations & Reviews

The Deep and Dark Blue by Niki Smith

“After a terrible political coup usurps their noble house, Hawke and Grayson flee to stay alive and assume new identities, Hanna and Grayce. Desperation and chance lead them to the Communion of Blue, an order of magical women who spin the threads of reality to their will.

As the twins learn more about the Communion, and themselves, they begin to hatch a plan to avenge their family and retake their royal home. While Hawke wants to return to his old life, Grayce struggles to keep the threads of her new life from unraveling, and realizes she wants to stay in the one place that will allow her to finally live as a girl.” (Transgender representation) (Paul W’s pick)

Futari Escape by Shōichi Taguchi

“Two young women—one an overworked manga artist, the other a jobless slacker—try to escape the realities of adulthood. Whether it’s by going into debt while splurging on an epic meal or taking an impromptu trip, “Kouhai” and “Senpai” find a way to make the most of their days! Kick back and relax with this adorable comedy!” (Lesbian Representation) (Envi V’s pick)

Galaxy: The Prettiest Star by Jadzia Axelrod and Jess Taylor

“Every day in Taylor Barzelay’s life might seem perfect…but every day is torture. Taylor is actually the Galaxy Crowned, an alien princess from the planet Cyandii, and one of the few survivors of an intergalactic war. For six long, painful years, Taylor has accepted her duty to remain in hiding as a boy on Earth. But that all changes when Taylor meets Metropolis girl Katherine “call me Kat” Silverberg, whose confidence is electrifying. Suddenly, Taylor no longer wants to hide, even if exposing her true identity could attract her greatest enemies.” (Transgender Representation) (London H’s pick)

Girl Haven by Lilah Sturges and Meaghan Carter

“Three years ago, Ash’s mom left home and never returned, leaving behind a husband and child and a shed full of mystical curiosities related to the all-girl fantasy world she’d created as a child—Koretris. One day Ash invites a new group of friends from Pride Club over, and they try one of the spells to enter Koretris. To their amazement, they’re all transported to a magical realm filled with human-sized talking animals who are fiercely protective of their world and are ready to fight to protect it. But if Koretris is real, why is Ash there? Everyone has always called Ash a boy—shouldn’t the spell have kept Ash out? And what does it mean if it let Ash in?” (Transgender Representation) (Paul W’s pick)

Heartwood: Non-Binary Tales of Sylvan Fantasy by various

“Across time and cultures, humanity has spun tales about the forest: tales of caution, adventure, rites of passage, and discovery. Order these award-winning, modern-day tales of sylvan fantasy today to follow characters and creators like us into the woods and back again. HEARTWOOD: Non-binary Tales of Sylvan Fantasy is the first ever non-binary comics anthology, featuring 22 young adult stories made entirely by cartoonists who identify as a non-binary.
